Pakistan among top 10 economies in terms of its internet users

Pakistan among top 10 economies in terms of its internet users. ISLAMABAD: Nearly 16 million Pakistanis went online for the first time between 2012 and 2015, accounting for half the number of the overall internet users in the country, according to a UN report released on Tuesday. This made Pakistan one of the top 10 economies in terms of the number of its people going online during the period. The country was at the ninth position on the list compared to India (1st), Iran (7th) and Bangladesh (10th). However, the ‘Information Economy Report 2017’ — released by the UN Conference on Trade and Development — points out that many states in the Asia-Pacific region still remain relatively unprepared for the new digital era, and calls for concerted efforts to ensure that “no-one is left behind as a result of digitalisation”. Carrying ‘Digitalisation, Trade and Development’ as its theme, the report says Asia-Pacific economies play a central role in the evolving digital economy as prod...

Uber’s Board Approves Changes to Reshape Company’s Power Balance

Image
Uber’s Board Approves Changes to Reshape Company’s Power Balance SAN FRANCISCO — Uber’s board of directors voted on Tuesday for governance changes that will reshape the balance of power at the ride-hailing service, paving the way for a stock sale to the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and for the company to go public by 2019. The 11-member board met for less than four hours to approve   some of the terms from a proposal put forward last week   by Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s new chief executive, and Goldman Sachs, the investment bank that is an investor in the privately held company. As a result, the clout of certain Uber shareholders — including, most significantly, its former chief executive, Travis Kalanick, who is a board member — will be reduced, according to people briefed on the deliberations, who asked to remain anonymous because the conversations were confidential. Other proposed measures, including one that would have posed hurdles to Mr. Kalanick’s returning as...

Will Shahrukh Khan now work with this big director?

Image
Will Shahrukh Khan now work with this big director? Shahrukh Khan is shooting his upcoming film with director Anand L. Rai, and recently he has completed shooting for a TV show.  After the failure of 'Harry Mate Sejal', Shahrukh is looking for a strong script and it looks like this director of producer Rajkumar Hirani has ended up looking for Shahrukh Khan.  If news is to be believed, Rajkumar Hirani can start a film with Shahrukh Khan after finishing his work on Sanjay Dutt's biopic.  Rajkumar has said many times that he is a fan of Shahrukh Khan and wants to work with him. Rajkumar Hirani had offered Shahrukh Khan 'Munnabhai MBBS' and 'Three Idiots' but it did not matter, both the movies proved not only superhit but also became one of the most spectacular films of Hindi cinema, but now it seems that Shahrukh Khan does not want to repeat the old mistake. If Shahrukh says yes to filming with Rajkumar Hirani, then it will be a great experi...

Why Gun Control Loses, and Why Las Vegas Might Change That

Image
Why Gun Control Loses, and Why Las Vegas Might Change That. Chaos after gunfire at a concert in Las Vegas on Sunday. The gunman used a modified semi-automatic weapon to spray bullets into the crowd. After mass shootings like the nightmare in Las Vegas, there are always complaints that we don’t talk enough about gun control in America, that we need to actually have the debate about guns and mass murder that the National Rifle Association and the Republicans supposedly keep shutting down. I don’t think this is right. We do keep having a debate over guns in the United States; it’s just that the side that’s convinced that new regulations will prevent another Newtown or Orlando or Las Vegas keeps on losing the argument. Twenty years ago, you could argue that gun rights was a strictly minority cause that thrived because of its partisans’ intensity and its lobby’s clout and money. But that’s no longer true. Despite the best efforts of Barack Obama, Democratic po...

Now You Will Soon be Able to Block Your Stolen Mobile Phones in Pakistan

Pakistan is yet again making efforts to develop and deploy a system to block smartphones that are stolen or lost. Last time a similar attempt was made in 2008/09 under the chairmanship of Dr. Yasin. However, it failed due the fact that the system back then used only IMEI numbers for blocking a phone. Since IMEI numbers can be changed easily (through software) the system didn’t work and it failed even before deployment. This time law -enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies, mobile phone companies and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority gathered again to figure out if its possible to develop a computer system to disable phones that are stolen or los t. A local company has already been contracted for the purpose that’s soon going to deliver the solution to PTA. Here’s how the new system for blocking lost/stolen phones will work: PTA will maintain a list of allowed IMEIs (imported legally, PTA approved IMEIs, IMEIs paired with CNICs etc.) to be allowed to register with local net...
